Percale History

PERCALE

ANICHINI has long been renowned for its signature Italian jacquards and sateen's and have always offered a small collection of Egyptian cotton percale. In the past few years, there has been increased interest in percales.

Percale refers to a weave, not a fiber. The notorious thread count question, which is continually debated, was originally meant to measure only percales. A percale must have 200 or more thread counts per inch; less than that constitutes muslin sheeting. Muslin was first encountered in what is now Iraq; the name derives from the village of Mosul, Iraq. Muslin was brought to England in 1670. Percale was developed in India in the 17th Century.  It had a finer weave and was eventually produced in France. It is believed that the name is derived from the Persian word "pargalah" which means rag. In both in Europe and America it was common for women to purchase a bolt of the fabric which was then finished and decorated at home.

ANICHINI percale products are woven in 100% combed Egyptian cotton. Combing cotton removes impurities and short fibers.  Also, all of Anichini sheeting is Made In Italy. The Italians have yet to be surpassed as the best sheeting producers in the world!

From listening to our customers, we have developed a new "open stock" program in 200 and 400 percales.  We also have created an exceptional 500 percale program in traditional Anichini packaging.
